Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus (2009)
Tumblr media
Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus isn’t a battle between two prehistoric sea monsters; it's a struggle to stay awake. There is no reason for this movie to be this %$#*& boring.
Global warming releases two previously frozen prehistoric monsters from their icy prison. The giant octopus and the giant shark go on a rampage, reducing oil rigs to rubble, sinking countless ships and even knocking planes out of the sky. Witnessing this, oceanographer Emma (Deborah Gibson), her former teacher Allan (Lorenzo Lamas) and her love interest, Dr. Seiji Shimada (Vic Chao) must convince the idiots in the military to use pheromones to lure the creatures in one location in the hopes the mortal enemies will kill each other.
The movie’s sole selling point is the unintentional laughs it delivers. I laughed hard, really hard at the sight of a giant shark jumping out of the ocean to eat an airliner flying above the clouds. How did Mega Shark know the plane would be a tasty, crunchy treat filled with human meat? How did the shark know the plane was there? How many tries did it take for it to build up the necessary momentum to jump out of the water and snatch it out of the sky with its teeth? Did writer/director Jack Perez (working under the pseudonym Ace Hannah, which I have to assume is a joke as "Eight Ball" would've been more appropriate) think we'd just accept this? There are also moments where the acting is so terrible it does become pretty funny.
I’m giving Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus a mild, very mild recommendation as a feature for your bad movie night, but hear me out before you rush out to find a DVD. For the uninitiated in the bad movie genre, it's hilarious. If you’re a connoisseur, you’ve seen this kind of drivel before and the movie is often quite slow. You better have a big group of friends that don’t mind missing large chunks of the movie because you will have to talk over it to keep yourself entertained and the DVD doesn't have any subtitle options. I still think the laughs you get will be enough to make it worth your while, but just barely.
As a regular movie, this creature feature is atrocious. The special effects are laughable and lazy. In several scenes, models are either re-used or short clips of the octopus and the shark are replayed to make their one battle seem longer. To describe the performances as "wooden" is too gentle a word; they're embarrassing. The dialogue is pathetic. The screenplay amateurish and boring to sit through. You barely get to see the shark and the octopus. When the movie tries to be intentionally funny it also sucks the big one. What else can I say? It's awful.
Even as a movie that isn’t trying anything more than cheesy monster action, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus is rotten. You might have some fun watching it with your friends and copious amounts of alcohol while yelling and laughing at what’s on-screen, but you can do so much better. Like every other Asylum monster film, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus is barely watchable. (On DVD, September 13, 2014)

Influential sires: Dutch Warmbloods
8/ ∞
In Dutch there is a word for very influential stallions, “Stempelhengst”. Stempel means stamp, and hengst is stallion. It refers to the stallions that permanently put their stamp on a breed or discipline. One of such horses that comes to mind is Jazz (Cocktail x Ulster). Alternatively known as “Broere Jazz” in the showring, no other stallion has had this much of an impact on the dressage horse breeding lines.
The beautiful dark chestnut was born in 1991, with the name Jacob. Once he went to the stallion inspection trial as a 3-year-old he became known as Jazz. At the time, the KWPN studbook breeding didn’t know the different branches of disciplines like we have today, and all stallions were expected to perform in both dressage, show jumping and sometimes driving. While Jazz’ performance with dressage impressed the studbook, he failed the jumping test.
Jazz was sold to the family Bartels, where Tineke Bartels would start riding him in the show ring and eventually reach Grand Prix dressage. Cees Broere of Stoeterij Broere had been wanting to buy the stallion ever since he was a 3-year-old, and once the stallion was threatened to be sold overseas he took his chance and became a co-owner through a syndicate. Later he would buy the stallion fully and Kirsten Beckers became his new rider, again competing at GP level dressage.
The list of Jazz offspring that are approved as stud or perform at Prix St. George or Grand Prix is never-ending. Over 120 of them showed at GP level. The list of approved offspring is still growing, both through direct sons as grand- or great grandsons down the line, as Jazz is still used as a father animal today. His offspring are known to be quite difficult in personality, often very spooky and hot. Despite that, he is one of the most used sire in the dressage world. It is hard to find a Dutch dressage horse that doesn’t carry the Jazz line and several other “stempelhengsten” are direct offspring of Jazz. Even myself bred and owned a great-great grandson who still was very much stamped by the Jazz line, through his father (who was a copy of Jazz) and himself.
Jazz was retired from showing in 2011, at age 20. In the same year, they started cloning two horses of him. The clones were born in 2012. One of them, named Hollywood, has a successful dressage career under Patrick van der Meer. You can find a video of the pair here.
Jazz unfortunately passed away in 2020, at age 29. While he already left his mark on the Dutch Warmblood, through his frozen sperm there are still people today choosing to breed their mares to this icon and several direct offspring are born every year.

Planet of the Dead Return to the Stars as ‘Pilgrims’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Album Art by Jonathan Guzi
Every other day there's a story that calls our eyes heavenward to wonder about new planets discovered in nearby solar systems, terraforming Mars, or exploring the smallest elements in the universe. Anywhere has to be better than here, any time better than here right now. At least that's what a lot of people are feeling. How about the power of music to elevate us into vast dimensions of the imagination. One band out of New Zealand is interested in finding out what limits one can breach when the driving power of doom rock is hotwired with adventurous sci-fi/fantasy storytelling.
I speak, of course, of Wellington quartet PLANET OF THE DEAD Last year, Mark Mundell (vox), Malcolm McKenzie (guitar), Kees Hengst (bass), and Josh Hussey (drums) brought us the impressive first introduction to their soundscape and narrative concept, which elicited no small amount of praise for 'Fear of a Dead Planet' (2020), including the enthusiastic Bandcamper who gushed, "Some of the best jams I've heard in this universe!" Listen to fan favorites "The Eternal Void" or "Mind Killer" and you'll discover why there's excitement around this band's future.
But Planet of the Dead wasn't done yet. As many of us have already experienced, unexpected and elongated times of forced aloneness do crazy things to the creative mind. For one, it frustrates, as you cannot express the present songs you feel so strongly about to live crowds filled with spontaneous drifters. The moods usually shift out of sheer exasperated boredom, leading to the insatiable urge to begin tinkering again. 'Pilgrim' (2021) comes at us like an explosion with stories to tell and songs to wail. It's purpose-driven interdimensional doom we're talking about here. This may have been the impetus behind the second album’s creation, so closely after the birth of their first (incidentally, both records feature exactly eight songs a piece).
"Gom Jabbar" is the first creature we chance upon in this otherworldly dimension. He speaks with synth-enhanced vocals (ever so slightly) that's practically like an alien encounter if you listen to it high (gosh, sorry. I've gotta stop leaking album reviewer secrets like that). A defiant second voice joins the dialogue, sounding for all the world like Goliath, Hercules, or Hulkian figure.
"Pilgrim" stirs up grey and purple auras as this groovy sandcrawler glides across dunes and high above deserts, searching for the most fitting place to (re)build the world they once knew, perhaps even dare to dream beyond it. I'm assuming they're a scientific voyage on the run from a restrictive government in a week's long mini series I should have pitched to NBC 20 years ago for big bucks. The song allows your imagination drift on its own recognisance, before the closing words call us back to the shadows.
A dire feeling blankets the air throughout "Nostromo," a stomping little number that's straight-up doom rock, with a cool streetwalking kind of stride. It's impossible to not to think of previous adventures aboard vessels christened Nostromo, but each are mysterious encounters with the unknown, some of which yield new insights into our humanity by taking us back through some strange luck of heavy metal time travel to experience pivotal moments in astral history.
"The Sprawl" may be one of the most dismal legs of this journey, but in an exotic acid-soaked kind of way that makes you question your reality (and your own sanity) before the trip is done. The song is good about building various layers of joy and tension, then meshing them together for some distorted, fuzzy, electric, sparkin' Frankensteinian experience. Where will the spiral take us next? Confident lead gets a riff-enhanced jolt, staging march-like-groove that eventually turns meditative, psychedelic, and ethereal. And that's just the first side of the record! Go ahead, flip it over. You can't stop this far-invested in the trip. Shhh. Listen. Grungy, rumbling energy, extraterrestrial harmonics, and gnarly acid-touched solos are just ahead.
"Escape from Smith's Grove" jars the senses with the unexpected tonal shift from clarinets into a seismic pattern of eruptions that match our stomping feet. This is, after all, a jailbreak of sorts.
"Directive IV" takes the perspective of an enforcement officer who is just doing his job. Mark Mundell's vocal stylings are on-point. For me they compare to the pipes of the late-great Wayne Static, the spastic, growling frontman of Static X. Others may see more similarity with the "common man" grit of Scott Angelacos from Hollow Leg and Junior Bruce. Or even Kirk Windstein's apocalyptic spitfire with Crowbar.
The song appears to be a struggle of conscience between compassion and machine-like order, a tug-of-war that after several epic call and response segments in which our protagonist is put on trial by his peers. The tight grip of fascistic space goons gradually loosens their grip in the song's final minutes, as a street-worn riff storm carries our rebels far away from the grasp of whatever the fucks. That means our (now treasonous) soldier has a second chance at life in the (are you ready for this?) the unknown wilds of...
..."The Cursed Earth." This is a perfect song for that moment in a show when the alcohol or "legal tobacco" has sufficiently unlocked your third eye with stellar riffs and choruses (this song has several "ah-ha" moments). The vocals are obscured here and are sometimes backed up by other singers to emphasize a specific point in the lyrical narrative. The final moments again are slowed down with impactful tonal moments that make you think you're on the edge spying some strange meeting of warrior souls.
Things are not what they seem They never are
"The Great Wave" pulls you right into its hypnotic sway, interjected with extraterrestrial strains of thought communicated as if by a very blasted HAL 9000, our onboard computer. It's downright creepy when it hits you. Then again, maybe that's what we want from an intrepid album such as Pilgrim, to rope us into a fascinating narrative and invite us to return to sort out the details, several spins down the road. Now that I think of it, maybe these songs are all references pinned to great Alien, Robocop, and Judge Dredd moments? Listen closely to "Nostromo" and "Directive IV" and wonder. A good album should do that to a person, draw you into its storytelling and musical colour. It has me listening to it immediately from beginning to end, then end to beginning. If you wanna give it a shot, Planet of the Dead's monsterpiece will definitely reward your back-to-back listens.
Look for Pilgrims to come to life on July 23rd, with a fantastic spread of options on vinyl and CD (pre-order here). In the meanwhile, Planet of the Dead are letting us join the party leading up to the big drop right here at Doomed & Stoned HQ, where you can hear each track in full. Don't miss crucial insight from the band itself in 'Some Buzz' to follow. Then join in sharing your thoughts and theories (stoned or otherwise) on this transcendental New Zealand metal album in the comments below!
Give ear...
LISTEN: Planet of the Dead - Pilgrim
SOME BUZZ
Just little over a year following the release of their auspicious debut album, 'Fear of a Dead Planet' (2020), which attained more than 35,000 views on YouTube, New Zealand cosmic stoner and doom four-piece band Planet of the Dead are back with a new full-length album titled 'Pilgrims' (2021).
Hurtling towards the forever yawning void within their busted-up space freighter, they draw inspiration from classic science fiction and horror, and push supermassive and megalithic riffs to the outer limits.
Tumblr media
"Our second album came together around the titular track 'Pilgrim', which is based on the book 'Slaughterhouse 5' by Kurt Vonnegut. Musically, it plays upon the themes of moments trapped in the amber." So says the band about this new album.
"Our basic concept is heavy music played heavy, and we try to keep it simple. There are recurrent themes in our riffs which gives the album a sense of coherence, but we've experimented with some new sounds in the latest album which we feel results in a greater sense of dynamism.
"Lyrically, we dug deeper into our obsessions with classic sci-fi and horror. There is a distinctive and undeniable fan-fiction element to our work. We actively seek out cultural references, and weave them into our tapestries. Ultimately, we do everything we do for the great god Dyzan, for his greater glory...and for our mutual pleasure.”
Set for release on July 23rd, 'Pilgrims' will surely cement Planet of the Dead’s reputation as serious riff merchants.

“Rackets” and “Laminates” – Richard Goldberg (MFA 1987) Opening February 1 at 1pm at Far Out Gallery, this show will feature selections from two recent groups of work: “Rackets” and “laminates”.
The “Rackets” are an ongoing group of wall mounted, mixed media sculptural works. Theses sculptures are made with a variety of found objects and materials which take on new identities and meanings as they are synthesized into a single artwork of rhyming shapes, forms and imagery. Each “Racket” work has its own engaging identity, and story to tell.
Shown alongside of the “Rackets” will be collages that are called “Laminates” These works are 2 dimensional, irregular shaped collages of images, symbols, photographs and other visual material. These shaped collages are then laminated and cut out, to become a kind of flat sculpture with shapes and voids around the perimeter of each collage but also within and throughout the entire composition. They are floated in a shadow box frame which brings out their 3 dimensionality. The “Laminates” were a product of an evolution of ideas and impulses that lead the artist to move on to the more robust 3 dimensionality of the “Rackets”.
Mike Henderson: The Black Paintings + David Simpson: Interference On view through March 28, 2020 at Haines Gallery.
Mike Henderson: The Black Paintings (MFA 1970): Showcasing a body of related works made primarily in the 1990s by recent Artadia Award winner Mike Henderson, the paintings included in this exhibition feature a rich palette of lush blacks, steel grays, and ultramarine blues. Set against the darkness, small shapes of bright blues, yellows, and reds flicker like jewels. Henderson’s experimental films from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s will be shown in dialogue with the paintings. Politically charged and wickedly funny, these remarkable shorts have been screened at museums and festivals around the world. In addition to the exhibition, The Mike Henderson Band will be performing on January 17 as part of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco. Click here for tickets and more information!
David Simpson: Interference (BFA 1956): Acclaimed Bay Area painter David Simpson’s exhibition takes its title from his use of “interference” pigments, which shift in color with changes in light and the viewer’s perspective. Each canvas on view is the result of up to thirty coats of paint, meticulously layered to create a deep, lustrous surface. Now in his 90s, Simpson continues to delight with works of remarkable dynamism, evoking the movement of clouds, or the play of light across water, ultimately offering viewers a powerful space of contemplation.

November 6 - Versprochen ist versprochen...Brauhaus statt Bauhaus. Am 6.11- Live@Brauhaus in Dessau!
Was in der letzten Woche so abging… Alter Verwalter.

Turkish Democracy Project joins calls to stop drone technology supply to Turkey

Turkish Democracy Project joins calls to stop drone technology supply to Turkey
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Turkish Democracy Project (TDP) has called on three US companies to cut ties with Baykar Makina, whose TB2 drones have become a weapon of choice for repressive regimes around the world and which have been implicated in attacks on civilians in Armenia while prolonging bloody conflicts in Syria and Libya. These companies now risk major legal consequences for acting contrary to international sanctions.
Turkey has expanded its drone program over the last two decades and is now the fourth-largest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) producer in the world. While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues his assault on his country’s democratic infrastructure, so too is he pursuing a foreign policy which is no longer tethered to NATO values. In Erdogan’s hands, the TB2 drone has become a tool of oppression and violence, while Baykar Makina continues to do deals with regimes that deploy their technology against civilians. TDP has called on each company to cease the provision of their technology to Baykar with immediate effect.
In letters addressed to each by TDP’s CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, TDP presented comprehensive evidence that the companies’ technology has been used in the production of drones by Baykar, which in turn have been deployed against Armenian civilians in Artsakh as well as against the same Kurdish forces who helped turn the tide against ISIS.  TDP also gave detailed evidence of the risks involved in doing business with the Turkish military industrial complex, including the legal risk to supplying Turkish drones under the Countering American Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
TDP applauds those companies who have ceased engagement. For example, Garmin’s statement confirmed they were instructing all independent dealers to ‘cease selling Garmin products to Baykar’ due to the nefarious nature of their activities. TDP calls on those who continue to do business with Baykar to immediately end their relationships with the Turkish military industrial complex.
TDP CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace said:
“Turkish drones are infamous for their use by Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally, against Armenian civilians during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War.
“Turkey’s TB2 drones have been used in Syria against Kurdish allies of the United States, and in Libya, prolonging that country’s bloody civil war. Their indiscriminate use by the Turkish military and Turkish-backed forces have been widely condemned by the international community.
“It should be a matter of serious concern to US and European lawmakers that so many major domestic manufacturing, technology and defence companies have entered into business with Turkey’s military industrial complex. It is also worrying that when confronted with direct evidence of the crimes being committed using their products, these same companies have seen fit simply to ignore it.
“Beyond the moral implications of providing drone parts to an aggressive and expansionist military that targets civilian populations, most of these companies should face grave legal consequences for their action. A coalition of 27 US congress members recently signed a letter saying that technology transfers such as the ones these companies continue to make to Turkey clearly violate the terms of the CAATSA sanctions.
“In refusing to cut ties with Turkey in the face of direct evidence of the crimes the Erdogan regime is committing using their products, these companies are demonstrating that they do not take seriously the moral or legal implications of their actions. Lawmakers must take this into account in determining how these companies ought to be dealt with.”
The companies contacted by TDP who did not respond to calls to immediately cease working with Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar Makina were as follows:
Xilinx, Manufacturing/Technology, United States
Hengst of North America, Auto/Engineering, United States, Parent Company: Hengst Automotive (Germany)
Northrop Grumman, Aerospace/Defense, United States
Smart Microwave Systems, Electronics, Germany
The companies contacted by TDP who have confirmed they have ceased working with Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar Makina were as follows:
Comant, Manufacturing/Satellite Communications, United States
Viasat, Communications, United States
Garmin, Technology, Switzerland
Beringer Aero, Manufacturing, France
Trimble, Technology, United States
The Turkish Democracy Project is a nonprofit, non-partisan, international policy organization formed in response to Turkey’s recent turn away from democracy and toward authoritarianism.

Lee Yunhee / Nicole McLoughlin
Kim Eunsook / Tabitha McLoughlin
Kim Seokjin / Jin—”Trickster”
Min Yoongi / Suga—”Dreiauge”
Kim Namjoon / Monie—”Schlange”
Jung Hoseok / Hobi—”One Man Show”
Park Jimin / Jimmy—”Schlitzer”
Jeon Jeongguk / Kookie—”Kleiner”
Steve Yeun/Stevie McLoughlin—Sheriff
Kihyun / Kiki & Minhyuk / Minnie—Sheriff’s Advocates
Seán McLoughlin, Mark Fischbach & Felix Ulf Kjelberg—Banditen

Also, warum die Hektik?« »Meine liebe Katja. »Schatz, würdest du bitte auch mal was dazu sagen?« »Klar. Also Maia, Perry ist wirklich eine ganz eigene Hausnummer!« »Wie bitte? Du solltest mich verteidigen!« Claudia schaute verwirrt. »Verteidigen? Gegen was? Also, was regst du dich auf?« Claudia lachte. Read the full article
